30 Dec 04Trees Planted in Branksome Dene Chine
A festive tree-planting day at Branksome Dene Chine will produce a wonderful habitat in future years for local wildlife . A total of 300 trees, including Crab Apple, Rowan and Hazel have been planted by around 75 members of the public together with staff from the Dorset Wildlife Trust and Leisure Services Rangers from the Borough of Poole. These trees will provide fruit, berries and nuts for native birds, and insects for redstarts, blackcaps and whitethroats and other migrants arriving at our shore. In addition to individual trees a group from the Sea View Centre in Parkstone helped to plant a traditional hedgerow, which will provide homes for shrews, voles and other wildlife.
The cliffs along Poole's promenade are a valuable corridor for rare wildlife including Dartford warblers, sand lizards and green tiger beetles. Younger members of the community raked a sloping area and spread heathland seeds over it to provide refuges for these Dorset specialities.
Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: "We are very grateful to those who volunteered. At this busy, festive time of year it was very encouraging to see so many people giving their time and working hard to improve our local environment."
