Special Educational Needs Policy
Purpose
This new Special Educational Needs (SEN) Policy and Strategy, has been informed by the following reviews: • Review of SEN including role of special schools 2003/2004 • Pan-Dorset review of children with disabilities 2005 The provision of (SEN) services is a statutory requirement under the Education Act 1996. The Local Education Authority (LEA) have a duty to make arrangements for those children who have learning and behavioural difficulties which call for special educational provision to be made for them. Special educational needs may include learning, sensory, emotional and behavioural needs. Most children with special educational needs can have their needs met from resources already available to all mainstream schools. A small number of children may have significant and long term difficulties, and may require placement in LEA special schools or independent special schools. The needs of these children are set on an individual basis.
