Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset Structure Plan

The Bournemouth, Dorset & Poole Structure Plan is a strategic development plan for the entire county, with an end-date of 2011. It replaces the South East Dorset Structure Plan which was due to expire in 2001.

This Structure Plan is unusual because three authorities are responsible for it:

  • Borough of Poole
  • Dorset County Council
  • Bournemouth Borough Council

It sets out strategic policies such as:

  • Number of houses to be built in each district
  • Location of major shopping development

Some important strategic policies in the Bournemouth, Dorset & Poole Structure Plan that will affect Poole includes:

  • Allocation of 9,500 dwellings in the Borough between 1994-2011
  • Development 29 hectares of employment land between 1994-2011
  • Emphasis upon major retail development to the Town Centre
  • Identifying a Green Belt around the South East Dorset Conurbation

From the direction of the structure plan, the Poole Local Plan looks to allocate individual sites to achieve these requirements.

The Structure Plan is currently under review. The replacement Structure Plan Deposit Plan (July 2004) can be viewed at dorsetforyou.com and representations to the Deposit Plan can be made between 8th July and 10th September. Comments should be e-mailed to depositstructureplan@dorsetcc.gov.uk or, by letter, to Environmental Services, Dorset County Council, County Hall, Dorchester DT1 1XJ.
