The Skills Task Group has been looking at issues around recruitment and retention of staff. A mix of factors appear to impact locally: competition for labour due to low unemployment; the changing profile of Poole’s population; high house prices and local transport. Opening hours of town centre shops and facilities and public transport through the evening and night also impact on shift workers.
The ‘Full Sail Ahead’ regeneration project around the port and central area of Poole creates opportunities to tackle some of these difficulties. Improvements to the town centre, research into Poole’s night-time economy, targeted skills festivals and promotions for both young people and older people returning to work or considering a career change are planned.
