Strategic Planning

The Strategic Planning Unit carries out a diverse range of functions that cut widely across the array of Council activities. Working with a diverse range of partners the Strategic Planning Unit helps to shape the future of Poole through researching and understanding the needs of the community, the preparation of planning policy for the Borough, the promotion of economic development and providing support for the Local Strategic Partnership, and carrying out the Council's corporate performance tasks.

The Unit is made up of 6 teams:

  • Planning Policy and Implementation whose primary role is the production of the statutory planning framework for Poole, including those plans and policies that make up the Local Development Framework, a suite of planning documents that over time will replace the Poole Local Plan First Alteration link will open in new window adopted March 2004. The team also promote the implementation of planning policy through the preparaption of statutory and non-statutory guidance, and participation in the development/regeneration process, and working with regional and sub regional partners seek to influenece higher level strategies such as the Regional Spatial Strategy, promote the Borough and secure public investment in infrastructure.
  • Community Planning who support Poole Partnership, Poole's Local Strategic Partnership (LSP), by providing the secretariat to this group. The LSP is a single overarching strategic partnership for the town that brings together the public, private, business, voluntary and community sectors. Key functions of the team include the production of the Sustainable Community Strategy (SCS) which identifies the key challenges for the town, and priorities for tackling these, and supporting the process and development of the Local Area Agreement, the action plan for the SCS.
  • Economic Development who have responsibility for the review and implementation of the sub regional economic development strategy and support the management of the Enterprise and Economy aspects of the Local Area Agreement. In addition they develop and maintain good relations with the business community, promoting inward investment and responding to requests for assistance from business as well as delivering projects to facilitate the improved performance of the local economy.
  • Corporate Research link will open in new window undertake a wide range of work to provide the evidence base to underpin corporate policy making as well as that of the other teams within the Strategic Planning Unit. They provide a research service to clients within and outside the Council, manage corporate consultation and are home to the Geographical Information System (GIS).
  • Corporate Performance support the business planning process within the Council. They are responsible for performance management and reporting of how the Council is doing, including supporting external inspections of the Council, and for developing the Council's equalities policies and ensuring the Council achieves the appropriate equality standards.

  • Business Support offer back up services for the Unit including Health and Safety, administration tasks and business monitoring and improvement.
