Schools in Poole have once again gained GCSE results well above national averages according to government Performance Tables.
57% of students in Poole schools achieved at least five top grades (A*-C) at GCSE including English and mathematics compared with 50% nationally, with 69% achieving a Level 2 qualification. 99% of pupils in Poole gained at least one qualification (A*-G), and 94% achieved five or more pass grades (A*-G) including English and mathematics, all improvements since last year. 58% of young people in Poole gained at least two high grades A*-C in science (compared with 53% nationally) and 57% gained at least one qualification (A*-G) in a modern foreign language (compared to 45% nationally).
Cllr Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children's Services, Borough of Poole, said: "I am delighted that schools in Poole have again been able to show improvements and that they compare so well with the national picture. Poole is one of the top Local Authorities for pupils gaining 5+ GCSEs including maths and English, and we are extremely proud of the number achieving high grades. Students have to work extremely hard over several years to succeed well at GCSE but these efforts are extremely worthwhile and give an important starting point for our young people's working lives and the chance to undertake further training".
Stuart Twiss, Head of Children's and Young People's Services Strategy, Quality and Improvement added, "It is good that Poole is within the top Local Authorities nationally for GCSE. The combined results for the Borough and the outcomes for individual schools show high performance. It is a credit to the schools and students in Poole that we continue to show improvements each year.
"Teachers and support staff in schools have continued to work extremely hard to enable each student to achieve their best and I am pleased to see their efforts being rewarded by improvements in results. Over recent years there has been more pressure on schools to perform better at GCSE, and students themselves are taking more subjects than in the past. Poole is one of the top Local Authorities for pupils gaining 5+ GCSEs including maths and English, and we are extremely proud of the number of pupils achieving high grades.
However, these exam results are only one measure of a school's success and we must remember also our students' achievements in so many other areas of school life which play an important part in taking young people forward into adulthood."
