DJs 'Mix It Up' at Camp Bestival

A group of DJs with learning disabilities from Bournemouth and Poole are preparing for their debut festival appearance at Camp Bestival link will open in new window at Lulworth Castle link will open in new window this summer.

The 'Mix It Up' crew will be entertaining the audience during a two hour slot on Sunday afternoon at the festival which takes place 24 - 26 July. They will be showing off their DJ skills with an eclectic mix of music from disco to techno with a smattering of pop.

The DJs have been working with professional, Simon Green as part of the 'Mix It Up' DJ training project since May 2007. The project has enabled the DJs to showcase their skills at the popular 'Big Night Out,' at Lighthouse in Poole - the only club night event in the area run by and for people with learning disabilities.

I've heard all about what the gang have been up to and watched the inspirational footage of them rocking the joint. In fact I'm quaking in my boots that they might upstage me."

This is a fantastic opportunity for people with learning disabilities to be able to take centre stage at a local mainstream cultural event."

"Many people with learning disabilities don't get the opportunity to attend local night clubs, let alone large-scale outdoor events and festivals like Camp Bestival. The 'Mix It Up' crew have polished their skills on their own turf and are ready to perform to a festival crowd."

Councillor Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: "This project highlights the contribution people with learning disabilities make to the cultural life of our community. This is a high profile event and I'm sure the DJs will rise to the occasion and put on a fantastic show."

The project has been developed through a partnership between Bournemouth People First and Poole Forum link will open in new window working with Bournemouth Borough Council and Borough of Poole Arts Development teams.
