29 May 09Sowing The Seeds For Future Flower Festivals
Officials and horticulturists from twinned French town Cherbourg
will visit Dorset next month with a view to supporting future flower festivals in Poole.
The group from Cherbourg, including the town's Mayor and Member of Parliament, Monsieur Bernard Cazeneuve
, will visit the flower show at Kingston Maurward's open weekend
on June 13 with members of the Poole - Cherbourg Twinning Association
.
Poole, and the wider area of Dorset, has a number of parks and gardens including Upton Country Park, Compton Acres
and Kingston Lacy
which members of the association are keen to promote to international visitors.
During the weekend visit the Mayor of Poole, Cllr Charles Meachin, and Leader of the Council, Cllr Brian Leverett, will meet with the Mayor of Cherbourg to discuss the possibility of Poole and Cherbourg alternately hosting an annual flower festival.
Cllr Les Burden, Council Representative of the Poole - Cherbourg Twinning Association, said: "We live in a very beautiful area and we are keen to promote Poole and encourage more international visitors. This is a real opportunity to sow the seeds of future partnerships in helping to improve the connection between Poole and Cherbourg, boost local economies and increase tourism."
Cllr Burden, who is also Chairman of the Broadstone Horticultural Society
, and Tony Watts of the Poole-Cherbourg Twinning Association first met with Chairmen of various floral societies during a visit to Cherbourg earlier this year.
The open weekend at Kingston Maurward
will run from 10am until 4pm on June 13 and 14.
