Tea Dances Go From Strength To Strength

Afternoon tea dances in Poole have proved such a hit with older residents that the organisers are staging a major event to mark the new year.

The Grand New Year Tea Dance at Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the Arts, on Thursday January 8, will feature musicians from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra link will open in new window playing everything from waltzes to tango, jive and jazz.

Borough of Poole launched regular tea dances 12 month ago to encourage older residents to keep fit and active.

The first tea dance attracted so many people the organisers had to double the size of the venue. Now around 80 people attend the bi-monthly events, including keen dancers, complete novices and many who just enjoy listening to the music.

Organisers have booked Lighthouse's main concert hall to stage the tea dance event.

Anna Shiels, of Borough of Poole's Arts Development Unit, said: "We're very excited about this special event. Our regulars know there is always a warm and friendly atmosphere at our tea dances. This event will be extra special with a marvellous six-piece band and a spacious dance floor in the main concert hall. I hope people will take the opportunity to make a group booking and help the party go with a swing!"

Regular tea dancer Len Briers said: "It's good exercise and wonderful for making friendships. A lot of people come on their own but we don't let them stay on their own for long and you can't beat live music!"

The Grand New Year Tea Dance takes place on Thursday January 8 between 2pm and 4pm. Tickets, to be booked in advance, cost £5 (Access to Leisure cardholders £3.50) and are available from Lighthouse on 0844 4068666.

Further tea dances on planned for March 12 and May 21 (2pm to 4pm).
