20 Jun 08Dorset Way Footbridge Works
Work will begin on Monday 23 June to improve a footbridge over the Dorset Way.
The footbridge between Verity Crescent and Frankie and Benny's restaurant at Tower Park
will have a steel cage installed to improve safety and help prevent anti-social behaviour.
A series of overnight closures of the Dorset Way between Mannings Heath roundabout and Tower Park roundabout will take place while the work is carried out. The road will be closed from 9pm until 5am for seven nights starting on Monday 23 June. Diversions via Ringwood Road will be signposted.
The footbridge will be closed at all times to pedestrians for two weeks while the work is completed. Signs showing an alternative route will be erected on site.
There has been a gradual rise of anti-social behaviour at the footbridge in recent months despite being covered by CCTV and warning posters.
A total of 27 incidents of items being thrown onto the carriageway were reported to Police between January 2006 and May 2007. Objects thrown from the bridge include bottles and shopping trolleys.
The caging, which is identical to previous work carried out at another footbridge along the Dorset Way, will be carried out by Carillion Civil Engineering
under contract to Borough of Poole.
