Poole Museum Gets 'Innovative' for Museum and Galleries Month

Poole MuseumPoole Museum will be celebrating national Museum and Galleries Month throughout May by hosting a number of ‘ideas and innovation’ themed events.

The celebrations begin on Saturday 10 May with an ‘Archaeological Finds Day’ where people can bring along items they have unearthed and have them examined by an expert from Dorset County Council link will open in new window. Admission is free and the event will run from 10am – 4pm. From 10 May visitors will also be able to handle some real archaeological finds from the local area.

Visitors taking part in the day are asked to bring along objects they have unearthed through metal detecting, field walking or just gardening at home for their chance to find out what their discoveries could be and how they contribute to the county’s past.

On Friday 16 May, the fifth floor of Poole Museum will be transformed into a mini cinema for the ‘Museum at Night’ event. There will be a screening of Nick Park’s Oscar ® winning film ‘The Wrong Trousers’, as well as a selection of episodes of Aardman’s link will open in new window latest show, ‘Shaun the Sheep’. The screening is at 6:30pm and tickets are £2 each which includes a soft drink and popcorn.

The museum’s new ‘Community Cabinets’ will also be launched at the Museum at Night event and will run from 6:30pm - 8pm. The modern day design-your-own museum cabinets provide visitors with a chance to create and photograph their own displays. Guests are invited to bring along small items with an “ideas and innovation” theme to feature in the very first Community Choice exhibition. Admission is free and free refreshments will also be provided.

Throughout May young people under the age of 14 are also being encouraged to try their hand at archaeological illustration and take part in the ‘Young Archaeologists Drawing Competition’. Entries will become part of a national competition run by the Young Archaeologists Club link will open in new windowand entrants have the chance of winning a number of archaeological prizes, which include books and other great prizes.
