26 Mar 08Beware of Bogus Callers
Residents are being urged to be vigilant about bogus callers by the Safer Poole Partnership.
Following reports of a security firm claiming to be representing the Partnership 'cold calling' residents in the Poole area, the organisation is warning people to be cautious.
They say they have not enlisted any security firm to represent them and that residents should be wary of telephone or doorstep sales people.
Advice that people should follow when dealing with such situations includes using a safety chain when answering the door to unknown visitors; not allowing strangers into your home without first seeing identification; checking identification if the caller is unexpected; and not giving personal details to 'cold callers' on the telephone, including details of when you will not be home.
Residents are also advised to ask telephone callers for a contact number and more information so that they can check their credentials and call them back.
Anthi Stylianou, Community Safety Partnerships Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "We encourage residents to check for identification and make further enquiries. If people do not provide the relevant identification or are unhappy about providing telephone details or further information then residents should be cautious."
