13 Mar 08Don't Let the Cowboys Cash in on Storm Damage
Poole residents are being warned to beware of cowboy traders offering to repair damage to properties caused by the recent storms.
As homeowners all over the UK count the cost of the damage caused to their property, legitimate builders, plumbers, carpenters and other craftspeople will be working at full stretch to keep up with repairs.
However, rogue traders may see the storm damage suffered by some homes as an excuse to make some easy money.
Borough of Poole is advising residents to be wary and is urging them to be prepared when dealing with traders offering to tackle repairs such as missing roof tiles and broken fences.
Cllr Don Collier, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole, said: “Always be wary if approaches are made by traders you do not know. Generally it makes sense to be prepared by keeping emergency contact numbers for the gas, electricity and water suppliers, and insurance company, handy just in case. You should always obtain quotes before work is carried out, get receipts for jobs completed and use traders who are members of recognised trade associations.”
“Don’t let the severe weather give the cowboys the opportunity to leave a trail of shoddy workmanship and hefty bills behind them.”
Borough of Poole Environmental and Consumer Protection Services advise people affected by storm damage to contact their insurance companies before engaging anyone to carry out repair work. It is often a requirement to only use businesses approved by the insurers.
In the case of flood damage, electricity and gas companies will make free inspections to advise on safety work required.
