Borough of Poole has been successful again in its fight against abandoned vehicles in the town.
On Friday 4 January 2008, at Poole Magistrates Court, Mr Brian Maxwell of Hyde Road, Bournemouth was found guilty of abandoning a car on Haymoor Road, Poole, in December 2006.
Mr Maxwell was prosecuted following an investigation by officers from Environmental and Consumer Protection Services (E&CPS), which resulted in the car being removed and destroyed.
A member of the public reported the vehicle to the Council after it had been there for a couple of weeks and it had two flat tyres.
Mr Maxwell pleaded not guilty, but failed to attend court on the 4 January. In his absence, the District Judge found Mr Maxwell guilty and fined him £500 to be paid in 28 days. The Judge also awarded the Council £2,256.34 in costs.
Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "The size of the fine imposed and the costs awarded to the Council reflects the seriousness of the offence. Abandoned vehicles are not only a visual blight on the borough but also attract vandalism and anti-social behaviour. They cost the Council a large amount of money to investigate and dispose of each year. ‘Protecting Poole's Environment’ is a Council priority and hopefully this case will warn those people who think it is acceptable to abandon their vehicles rather than dispose of them correctly."
If anyone has suspicions that a vehicle may have been abandoned they can ‘report it’ online at www.boroughofpoole.com or telephone: 01202 261700.
