Record Number Of Young People Receive Duke Of Edinburgh Award

Duke of Edinburgh Award 2007(2)A record number of young people in Poole gathered at two special ceremonies to receive their Duke of Edinburgh Awards link will open in new window.

More than 100 bronze award candidates took part in a ceremony held at Hamworthy Club in Canford Magna, while a second ceremony held at the Civic Centre, Poole, celebrated the achievements of 51 silver and five gold candidates.

The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Jeff Allen and the Mayoress, Rosemary Allen attended the first ceremony and the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Judy Butt was a guest at the second.

Participants came from Creekmoor Open Award Centre, Limelights Youth Centre and various schools in Poole, including Poole High link will open in new window, Uplands link will open in new window, Corfe Hills link will open in new window, Parkstone link will open in new window and Poole Grammar link will open in new windowSchools, Rossmore Community College link will open in new window and Montacute Special School link will open in new window.

Duke of Edinburgh awards 2007Cllr Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children and Youth Services, said: “I would like to congratulate all these young people on their achievements. I’m delighted that so many schools are now offering this scheme to their students and that young people are so keen to take up the challenge. The Duke of Edinburgh award is a nationally recognised achievement and will help these young people progress their careers and prepare for future challenges.”

At the first award ceremony, John McBride, Chief Executive of Borough of Poole, was presented with a new licence on behalf of the Council, by Phil Treleven, South West Regional Director of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme.

John McBride, Chief Executive of the Borough of Poole, said: “I’m delighted to receive the licence on behalf of the Borough of Poole so that young people can continue to achieve in such a positive and worthwhile scheme. All the young people who have received the award should be extremely proud of their achievement. I would also like to pay tribute to the volunteers who help deliver the award in Poole.”
