Gift Of Reading For Young Children

Borough of Poole library staff delivered free books to local school children to encourage a love for reading.

More than 1,300 copies of the classic children’s book Funnybones by James and Janet Ahlberg have been given to four and five year olds in school reception classes as a gift to take home and read.

Heatherlands First School, Reception classPoole library staff talked to children in 24 schools across the borough as part of the nationwide ‘Booktime link will open in new window’ project. The pupils were each given a copy of the book and a free school satchel.

The project aims to foster a love of reading at a young age and encourage children and families to use local libraries to see the wide variety of books and resources available to them.

Laura Sneddon, Libraries Literacy Officer, Borough of Poole, said: “The sessions have been really fun and the children have been so enthusiastic. It will be great to welcome all the children we have met, and their families, into our ten libraries so they can continue to develop their reading habits.”

Booktime is supported by Booktrust link will open in new window and the Department of Children, Schools and Families link will open in new window.

The Booktime project was created by publishing company, Pearson link will open in new window who donated the free books and satchels. This is the first year the project has gone national following a pilot last year in Warwickshire and Southwark.
