Museum Goes Back To The Iron Age

Poole MuseumPoole Museum is going back in time to the Iron Age for the half-term holidays.

Visitors will be able to learn what everyday life was like for residents of Poole more than 1,500 years ago when the museum stages its ‘Amazing Iron Age’ activity day on Friday October 26.

There is a chance for children to have their face painted in the style of a fearsome Iron Age warrior between 2pm and 4pm. Visitors will also see the kind of food Iron Age tribes would eat and can have a go at grinding flour. They will be able to handle historic Iron Age artefacts from the museum’s collection and try their hand at making their own Iron Age pots, jewellery and a mini coracle.

Poole Museum, which reopened in July following a £1.3 million facelift, is home to one of the UK’s largest surviving Iron Age artefacts. The famous Poole log boat, which dates back to around 300BC, is on permanent display at the museum.

The Iron Age day is part of a week of family activities at Poole Museum.

‘Beautiful Butterflies’, on Monday October 22, will give families a chance to find out about butterfly species found in Poole and children will be able to create their own magnetic butterflies or decorate butterfly masks to take home.

Tuesday October 23 and Thursday October 25 is ‘Practically Potty’ day and a chance to learn the different ways to make pots from clay or decorate tiles.

Visitors on Wednesday October 24 will meet a Roman soldier, Gavius Gaius Silvanus, and learn about his life as part of a Roman activity day.

Cllr Peter Adams, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture, Borough of Poole, said: “Poole has a rich heritage and this week of half-term activities is a fun opportunity for parents and children to learn about the history of the town and explore our wonderful museum.”
