Carers: Take A Break

Carers looking after a friend or relative in Poole are being encouraged to take a break by attending a free mystery tour coach trip and cream tea.

Carers’ Champion and former Mayor of Poole Ray Smith and Val Mitchell, Carers Services Manager for Borough of Poole, have organised the coach trip September 18.

The coach trip will offer carers looking after a friend or relative who is sick, disabled or frail a chance to get a break and an opportunity to meet other people in a similar situation.

Val Mitchell, Carers Services Manager, Adult Social Services, Borough of Poole, said: “Looking after someone is hard work and carers can often feel very alone and unable to take a break. Research shows that carers who take breaks and feel supported are better able to cope with the difficult task of caring and reduce the risks to their own health. Carers don’t have to cope alone, we are just a phone call away.”

Ray Smith said: “Carers need more support from central government but it is my ambition to try to make their life a little better by arranging some days out during the course of the year.”

A low cost sitting service can be arranged through Borough of Poole’s Adult Social Services if needed in the carers absence.

Poole carers are encouraged to sign up early for the trip. Those who would like to join the trip, find out about support groups, courses, study days or other activities can contact Val Mitchell on 01202 261174.
