23 May 07Beach Patrols To Tackle Underage Drinking
Borough of Poole is working with Poole Police
to ensure that local beaches are not blighted by underage drinking this summer.
Police will be increasing their patrols throughout the summer months to ensure Poole’s beaches do not become meeting places for underage drinkers who spoil the enjoyment of other visitors.
Anyone under the age of 18 caught in possession of alcohol will have it confiscated and will be issued with a verbal warning. Police will also consider contacting the parents/ guardians of underage drinkers.
Underage drinkers can cause a nuisance to other beach users, vandalise beach huts and threaten their own safety while under the influence of alcohol.
Lucy Magill, Regulatory Services Manager, Environmental and Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole, said: “We are so lucky to have such stunning beaches in Poole and we need to make sure that everyone can enjoy them. We do not tolerate underage drinking in any public places as this can often lead to anti-social behaviour. We also ask parents and adults to refrain from buying or supplying alcohol to people under the age of 18.”
She added: “We want young people to enjoy our beaches and socialise with their friends but they should be aware that it is dangerous to enter the sea when they have consumed too much alcohol, Poole’s beaches are safe and everyone should be welcome to enjoy them peacefully and safely.”
Inspector Rob Snowden, Poole Section Commander said: “Our intention is to ensure that everyone can enjoy the beaches in a safe and responsible way. Inappropriate and excessive use of alcohol can lead to persons committing crime and causing mindless damage. What is a group of friends having fun to one person can be perceived fearfully by another.”
