Poole Quay To Help With Smoke Free

Borough of Poole's Environmental and Consumer Protection Services is taking information about ‘Smokefree’ link will open in new window and littering to Poole Quay on Saturday June 2, from 11am to 3pm.

The event is in preparation for the introduction of Smokefree legislation on July 1, which is expected to cause an increase of littering in the form of discarded cigarette butts.

Officers from Borough of Poole Environmental and Consumer Protection Services will hand out personal ashtrays and chewing gum pouches to encourage people to dispose of their litter sensibly.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, Borough of Poole said: "We are keen to reinforce the message to the public that cigarette butts are actually litter and should not be discarded on the street. In Poole High Street and other busy pedestrian areas, litter bins have been fitted with stub it plates for people to put out their cigarettes and dispose of them safely in the bin.”

Jeff Morley, Team Manager, Environmental and Consumer Protection Services, said: "We are concerned that the Smokefree legislation may result in an increase of littering. We are asking people to dispose of their cigarette butts in a litter bin or in a personal ashtray. Where necessary, formal enforcement action, such as issuing fixed penalty notices, may be taken against individuals who drop their cigarette butts."

Borough of Poole has been working alongside the licensed premises along Poole Quay to encourage owners and staff to take pride in this area and pass this message onto their customers.

The Poole Safe team recently met with the licensed premises along the Quay and they have all signed up to 'Code Of Conduct' to work together to assist in keeping the whole Quay clean and tidy by conducting regular glass and litter collections.
