Museum At The Heart Of The Community

Local people's memories and mementoes of Poole will be a major focus of the refurbished Poole Museum when it re-opens in early July.

Extensive redevelopment work undertaken by local company, Greendale Construction has transformed the Museum into a modern venue to celebrate Poole's History.

Alongside four floors of permanent displays, two community based, temporary exhibitions will be launched at the opening; these are:

'A Sense of Place - Hamworthy Voices' - is an exhibition which tells the tale of life in the Poole district of Hamworthy. This will include audio visual accounts of day-to-day life over the years and evocative memories from Hamworthy residents. The exhibition will hold objects and resident's personal memorabilia that will bring the stories to life.

Hamworthy resident Penny Bartlett, 58, was one of the first to share her memories with Poole Museum. She said; "In the early to mid 60's, teenagers in Hamworthy found weekend dancing and music available at the Hamworthy Boys Club in Hoyal Road. It must have been good because kids came over from Oakdale & Poole. Local bands would perform and some from further away such as Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich who later went on to have hits in the Top Ten."

Poole Museum- Threads exhibition'Thread' - is an exhibition showing the work of a community textile project based on the history of Poole. The project involved 120 local people and 1,294 hours of work. It saw participants following a detailed process working with artists to produce beautiful textile hangings. Themes are: Poole and the Sea, Poole People, Poole Places and Poole Trade & Industry.

Michael Spender, Poole Museum Manager, Borough of Poole, said; "We want Poole Museum to be at the heart of the community. With temporary exhibitions changing frequently and free admission we hope people will visit regularly with their families for an excellent day out. The museum will tell a fascinating story of Poole's history which can be enjoyed by local people and visitors, whatever their age."

Poole Museum wants to hear from any Hamworthy residents who have stories or personal memorabilia they would like to contribute to the 'A Sense of Place' exhibition. Hamworthy residents past and present are invited to 'drop-in' sessions at the following locations:

  • Friday 11 May, 10am-12pm - Hamworthy Library
  • Saturday 12 May, 11am-1pm - Hamworthy Library
  • Wednesday 16 May, 10am-11am - St Michael's Church
  • Thursday 17 May, 10am-12pm - Hinchliffe Close Community hall (behind co-op)
