Poole's Building Consultancy Win South West Awards

Work on an eye-catching lifeboat station and a major housing development has earned Borough of Poole top honours at a prestigious regional awards celebrating the best of the British construction industry.

Borough of Poole’s Building Consultancy Services were partners in projects which won two awards and was runner-up in a third at the 2007 South West Local Authority Building Control Built In Quality Awards link will open in new window.

The team, in partnership with Crest Nicholson link will open in new window, won the Best Multiple Housing Site award for the Poole Quarter development at Pitwines. The development is creating a new community of 512 new homes, including apartments and houses, including affordable properties and a former brown-field site close to Poole town centre..

Borough of Poole collected a second award for Best Public/Community Project, in partnership with the RNLI link will open in new window, for the design of a new lifeboat station at Padstow in Cornwall.

The Building Consultancy team were involved with the early stage of design work for the innovative £6.3 million RNLI facility, which houses Padstow’s new Tamar Class all-weather lifeboat and crew facilities, on a stilt-like structure on the North Cornwall coastline. The structure is designed to be long-life, low maintenance and fail safe.

The RNLI has partnering agreements with Borough of Poole for all building regulation advice and applications for their property throughout England and Wales. Building Consultancy Services dealt with the building regulation approval for the scheme and worked with the RNLI's consulting engineers Royal Haskoning UK of Haywards Heath and project appointed architects Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole from St Ives.

Borough of Poole was awarded runner-up in the Best Local Authority Client Partnership with an Architect category, for its work with Poole-based architects Traves James.

Traves James has been associated with Building Consultancy for more than 20 years. In 2006, the firm entered into a formal agreement with Borough of Poole enabling Building Consultancy to deal with all Traves James’ building regulation schemes.

The annual awards, organised by Local Authority Building Control (LABC), recognise the best quality projects built in the South West during the last year.

Alan Muzzall, Head of Building Consultancy Services, Borough of Poole, said: “We’ve worked hard to build strong and effective relationships with key partners in the building industry. The fact that we now act as LABC Partners for the RNLI and Traves James, not only in Poole but nationwide, is a strong testimony to the success of our approach. These awards for the Padstow Lifeboat Station, Poole Quarter Site and Traves James recognises the achievements and hard work of the Building Consultancy staff and the Design Teams in producing quality buildings meeting the client’s needs.”

Howard Richings, RNLI Estates Manager, said: “It was a great honour to receive this LABC award for the RNLI Padstow Lifeboat Station. Our whole construction team worked so well together throughout the project to deliver an outstanding building. This award is a credit to all.”

Malcolm Kirk, Senior Technical Manager for Crest Nicholson (South), said:” The Poole Quarter site was a very challenging construction project and feel we have delivered an outstanding new development for the town of Poole and brought an old redundant Brown field site right in the centre of the town back to life, winning this award shows how well Building Control and the development team can work together”.

David James, Director of Traves James, said: “Whilst we did not win our category it was very satisfying to be judged alongside such household names as Midas Homes and be in the company of so many landmark buildings in the South West. The Borough and our company take considerable pride from such a strong showing in these awards finals.”
