The sculpture, entitled ‘Sailing By’ by Hamish Horsley, is located at the Bryant Homes’ development at Shapwick Road in Hamworthy.

Harbour Reach public art

The Portland stone artwork was commissioned and paid for by Bryant Homes link will open in new window at Harbour Reach as part of a public art scheme approved by Borough of Poole’s Culture and Community Service. Carved in Mr Horsley’s London studio, the sculpture was brought to the site for installation in February 2007.

The piece sits at Harbour Reach development, situated on either side of a Borough of Poole pedestrian and cycle path which forms a link from Poole’s lifting bridge to the water’s edge at Hamworthy.

The sculpture comprises a series of standing stones arranged to dynamic effect. Its silhouette reflects visual elements of the boats’ masts and sails in the harbour beyond the site, and frames views in either direction. Its presence complements the contemporary architecture of the surrounding housing.

The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Mrs Judy Butt, said: “I am delighted in the finished piece and amazed at how the 'pure' medium used is so fluid in its effect. Hamish Horsley has captured perfectly the essence of Poole and all its ancient maritime history, by bringing us into the present with this innovative but classic piece.

“Public art is a brilliant way of joining communities together, to share opinions and be free to speak openly about our growing collection of public art in Poole. I personally very much look forward to continued partnership working in bringing further successful projects such as ‘ Sailing By’ to all our Poole residents.

Nicky Whittenham, Public Art Implementation Officer, Borough of Poole, said: “Borough of Poole considers Bryant Homes’ commission a successful example of partnership working towards enhancement of the modern built environment and is pleased to be able to count Hamish’s artwork amongst the growing body of public art within the Borough.”

Marilyn Porter, Sales and Marketing Director for Bryant Homes said:” We are delighted to be the new home for Poole’s latest piece of public art. We have already received lots of positive feedback from our existing residents and welcome people to visit Harbour Reach and view the art for themselves.”

Bryant Homes at Harbour Reach is the first residential scheme to be developed in Hamworthy and is a major part of the area’s regeneration scheme. The development is transforming the waterfront in Hamworthy and providing a blend of contemporary apartments and homes. Most of the properties at Harbour Reach offer panoramic views of Poole Harbour, Arne Nature Reserve and the Isle of Purbeck. Further views extend to Brownsea Island and the Sandbanks Peninsula.
