5 Jul 07Slipway Works Signal Commitment To New Twin Sails Bridge
The first tangible step towards building the new Twin Sails Bridge has been made with the completion of an improved slipway in Poole.
The £160,000 slipway, at Slip Way off West Quay Road, offers boat users improved access to Back Water Channel and Holes Bay as well as storage facilities for about 60 dinghies.
The new slipway replaces the existing facilities at Wilkins Way, which will be lost when the new Twin Sails Bridge is built.
Lynda Bourne, Chair of Poole Harbour Association, whose 100-strong members include local fishermen and commercial anglers, said: “Members are really pleased with the new slipway. It makes access to the boats much easier and safer and it is an excellent improvement to the area.”
Cllr Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Local Economy, Borough of Poole, said: “This is a significant step towards the Twin Sails Bridge and is a tangible expression of the council’s commitment towards regeneration of the surrounding area.”
Dick Appleton, Harbour Engineer, Poole Harbour Commissioners, said: “The new slipway will provide the best possible safe access to moorings that will have to be relocated before the Twin Sails Bridge is built. The commissioners are pleased to have made their land available to ensure this project proceeded.”
