16 Jul 07Planning Application For Former Power Station Site
A planning application has been submitted for a major development on the site of the former power station in Hamworthy.
Developer and landowner JJ Gallagher has made an application to develop the power station site, which includes plans to build more than 1,600 new homes and provide new public access to the waterfront.
The development will also provide crucial funding, land and a link road for the new Twin Sails Bridge.
Proposals for the 13 hectare site include 1,674 new flats and houses, 4,000 square metres of commercial premises, a new public quayside and public squares, a neighbourhood green, community facilities and a children’s play area. It would also provide a road linking Blandford Road in Hamworthy with the new Twin Sails Bridge.
Cllr Brian Leverett, Leader of the Council, said: “We very much want to see new development at the former power station site. This is a large area of land with an attractive outlook that makes a superb place for people to live. It is great that it offers full public access to the waterfront that everyone can enjoy. However, the planning application submitted by JJ Gallagher shows more homes than we were expecting and will have to be carefully assessed in terms of the impact and benefits to the people of Poole.”
JJ Gallagher’s application is the largest received by Borough of Poole since it became a unitary authority in 1997.
The application will be considered over the next few months and a decision will be made by the Planning Committee on whether the proposed development is acceptable. This meeting will be open to the public and details will be advertised nearer the time.
A decision on the application will take into account the community benefits to the town, the appearance and quality of the buildings and public spaces, and what it will be like as a place to live.
The application will need to be resolved before work on the Twin Sails Bridge can begin.
