5 Apr 07Self-Service Comes To The Central Library
People visiting Poole's popular Central Library will soon be able to get their hands on their favourite books, music and films much quicker – thanks to a new self-service facility.
The library in the Dolphin Shopping Centre
is introducing a electronic ‘self-issue’ system which will allow borrowers to issue and return their own books, DVDs and CDs.
The self-issue system is easy to use and has proved successful in libraries across the country where it has been introduced.
Borough of Poole’s Culture and Community Learning Service is investing £84,000 in the self-issue technology which will allow library staff to offer customers a quick and efficient service.
Work to install the technology and ensure all stock is tagged and ready for self-issue means Central Library will be temporarily closed to the public from Friday, April 6, until April 23.
People will be able to use the self-issue system, when the library reopens on Monday, April 23.
Kevin McErlane, Head of Culture and Community Learning, Borough of Poole, said:
"Self-issue has proved successful in other libraries around the country and is popular with users of all ages. It is easy to use and our staff are always available to help. Library staff will be freed from routine tasks at the issues and returns desk and will be more able to devote time and attention to our customers.”
Other improvements will also be carried out while the library is closed, including the introduction of new carpet and furniture to enhance the appearance of the lower level. The study facilities will also be improved and Saturday opening hours will be extended so that the Central Library will be open from 9am to 5pm.
A new quick choice book promotion area will feature a seven-day collection service which will allow customers to access new and popular material on a fast turnaround basis, although people will still be able to get the same items on existing three-week loans.
