first schools achieve national healthy schools status

Borough of Poole is helping Poole schools achieve the new 'Healthy Schools Status' by encouraging pupils to lead healthier lives.

Three schools, Bearwood Primary and Nursery, Montacute and Old Town First and Nursery schools, are the first schools to successfully gain the status. They were presented with plaques and certificates by David Pearson, South West Regional Coordinator for Healthy Schools, to mark their achievements.

Every school in Poole has signed up to the programme and employs a healthy schools co-ordinator to work with teachers, parents and pupils to achieve the status.

Schools have to work on four themes, which are tailored for each specific age group. These include:

  • Healthy Eating - includes packing healthy and nutritious lunch boxes.
  • Physical Activity - includes walking to school instead of going by car.
  • Emotional Health & Well Being - includes increasing self esteem and understanding the anti-bullying message.
  • Personal, Social and Health Education - includes the message of safety at home for younger children and sex education, drug/alcohol awareness for older children

Di Mitchell, Acting Head of School Advice and Support Services, said: "Teachers who have co-ordinated the work have commented on how the scheme had drawn everyone into the process of helping children, parents, carers and teachers to make positive choices in their lives."

Cllr Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children's Services, said: "These schools are to be congratulated. Learning about how to live a more healthy lifestyle provides children with a good start to their future lives."
