Are you one of Poole's Unsung Heroes of the Community?

Are you one of Poole's unsung heroes of the community?

If so, then Poole's Crime and Disorder Partnership want to hear from you!

We are looking for an individual or a group that has been working actively in the community dealing with issues that have an impact on community safety or crime prevention. This covers a whole range of activities and topics but to qualify the project should encompass one or more of the following:

  • Making the community a safer place to live, work or visit
  • Improving the lives of those who are at risk of offending or re-offending
  • Helping and supporting those who have been victims of crime
  • Assisting in the prevention and/or detection of crime

The John Jay Shield was awarded to the Borough of Poole in 1996 when a visiting police officer from Poole was seconded to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. In appreciation of his work there, he was presented with the Shield which was in turn to be awarded annually by the Poole Crime and Disorder Partnership in recognition of crime prevention and/or community safety initiatives undertaken in the Borough of Poole.

Cllr. Chris Bulteel, Chair of Poole's Crime and Disorder Partnership said, "There are so many people in Poole who contribute to making their communities safer, we felt that this was a fantastic way of finding out who these people and organisations are and reward them. Poole is safer because of the people this reward scheme highlights, as well as the good work of many other statutory and private sector agencies"

Previous winners include:

  • Branksome Park, Canford Cliffs and Sandbanks Neighbourhood Watch
  • Poole Crime Prevention Panel
  • Johnnie Longden for Dawkins Road Industrial Estate
  • Denis Phillips for his contribution to Neighbourhood Watch and Streetwise
  • Funseeker (skateboard park fundraisers)
  • Supt Chris Dennis, Dorset Police (now retired)

If you would like to nominate a group or individual for the John Jay Shield, (please note you cannot nominate yourself) then please contact:
