11 May 05Poole Pride of Place Awards 2005
The Borough of Poole’s annual Poole Pride of Place Awards are being launched for 2005 and this year will again include a special prize for the best example of sustainable construction. It is hoped that this year the judges will feel able to make a specific award for developments that have focused on sustainable construction techniques. They are particularly looking for innovation in siting, the development materials, construction techniques, information technology, community involvement and local sourcing. The Council is encouraging everyone involved in the development process to sign up to "Future Foundations", a sustainable construction charter promoted by Regional Government in the South West. The award will be given to the project that makes the greatest contribution to the quality of the public realm in Poole, in terms of architecture, building conservation or landscape. Cllr Ron Parker, Portfolio Holder for Local Economy, said: "These awards are a regular event here in Poole and I am delighted that they are continuing to highlight sustainable construction developments within the Borough which are so valuable to the regeneration of our town." There is no restriction on the size or type of schemes that can be considered and anyone can nominate a scheme, provided that it was completed before the 31 December 2004 or in 2003 and have not previously entered for an award. The closing date for this year’s award entries will be noon on Wednesday 8 June 2005. If you know of a new building or improvement or a piece of landscaping that deserves nomination, or a new project that has used sustainable construction techniques, then either contact the architect or developer or make your own nomination. You can pick up a form from the Council offices or any public library in the Poole and send your nomination form to Head of Planning Design and Control Services, Borough of Poole, Civic Centre, Poole, Dorset, BH15 2RU, or via email to j.biggs@poole.gov.uk. This year the forms and further information can be downloaded by following the links on the Borough of Poole’s website at
