29 Apr 04Beach Huts are Given A Makeover

Phase one of work to spruce up the Borough of Poole's 1100 beach huts is well underway. £87,000 is being spent each year on minor maintenance and re-painting of all the beach huts in the familiar blue and white livery to help protect them from the elements.
Work on re-painting began at Branksome Dene Chine, which is complete and the painters are now working at Branksome Chine. The idea is to work west along the promenade over the next few months until all the beach huts have been completed. Funding for the painting works has been allocated from a share of the fees paid by licence holders who renew their licences annually.
In addition to the painting works the Council has recently allocated an additional £100,000 to be spent this year on roofing works to the huts in Shore Road.
Cllr Jonathan Pethen, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "This represents a sizeable investment by the Borough on our beach huts. It is important to invest in our infrastructure because if continued to be left the maintenance problems could become much worse and cost the authority a great deal more."
Jayne Taylor, Business Manager, Leisure Services, Borough of Poole, said: "Our beach huts are incredibly popular so it is very important that they are well maintained. We are delighted that we are now in a position to begin making some significant improvements to the huts, which will enhance our beautiful seafront"
