Lottery Bid Planned For Hamworthy Library

Residents in Hamworthy could get a new library, if a lottery bid being prepared by Borough of Poole is successful.

Poole Library Service is spearheading an attempt to secure up to £1.5 million from the Big Lottery Fund link will open in new window to replace the existing Hamworthy Library and Learning Centre in Blandford Road with a new community library facility.

Kevin McErlane, Head of Culture and Community Learning, Borough of Poole, said: “This is the first time that capital projects in public libraries have been eligible for lottery money.  There will be intense competition nationwide for the limited funds, but over the next few weeks we will be working with local library users, elected members, residents, schools and others to put together a strong bid for funds to revitalise library provision in Hamworthy.”

Plans are being drawn up for a new building on the existing library site. If the lottery bid is successful, the new building will have improved library space and extended information technology facilities.

There are also plans for closer links with Carter Community Sports College link will open in new window and improved community facilities, including meeting spaces for learning activities and community groups. The bid has to be submitted by the end of March and results will be announced in September.

Councillor Mike White, ward member for Hamworthy East, said: “The library is well used and a greatly valued resource in this area, but residents have told me they think it should be improved.”

Councillor Roger Gregory, ward member for Hamworthy East, added: ”I fully support the plans being developed to secure some lottery money for improvements in Hamworthy.”
