No Excuse To Dump Your Old Banger

Don't dump your car and risk a fine when it can be safely disposed of for free - That's the message from The Borough of Poole's Environmental and Consumer Protection Services (E&CPS).

From 1 January 2007 all car manufacturers and importers in the UK must have in place free 'Treatment Schemes' for the disposal of worthless cars and light vans. These schemes are designed to assist car producers meet environmental targets to recover 85% of the weight of materials in vehicles at the end of their lives and ensure that these materials are re-used, recycled or used for energy recovery.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "We have worked really hard to reduce the number of  abandoned cars from the streets of Poole, as they are a target for vandals and joy riders.

I am pleased to say that last year there were far less cars dumped in Poole than in previous years. With new treatment schemes offering free disposal of worthless cars there is no excuse to people to dump cars."

Owners who abandon cars without the landowners permission are liable to pay a fine with fees starting from £155 to the Borough of Poole. Last year three people were successfully prosecuted for illegally dumping their cars.

The Borough of Poole's partner in abandoned vehicle disposal is vehicle management company Charles Trents Ltd link will open in new window. Trents are a member of the 'CarTakeBack' scheme and will accept most cars - in some cases a small reimbursement is available -  they are currently offering a free collection service in the local area.
