A Blue Print For The Future Places Of Poole

Borough of Poole is launching a new manual outlining a vision for regenerating the centre of Poole.

The ‘Streetscape' Design Manual sets out standards for the design and appearance of the ‘public realm’ in the town, such as streets, open spaces and quaysides.

The manual promotes a strategic approach to the design of streetscapes around new roads and developments. It outlines a set of principles aimed at guiding developers and their designs for regeneration, to create coherent routes and spaces which complement buildings and add a new and valued public realm to the community of Poole.

It is based upon four major themes which all future developments must include as the regeneration of Poole continues. These are:

  • Introduction of trees and green spaces
  • Making the most of the waterside location
  • An innovative lighting scheme to improve night-time atmosphere and link public spaces
  • Public art integrated into developments

Jim Bright, Strategic Director for Strategic Planning, said: “It is important that the regeneration of Poole produces new and attractive public places that will one day become part of the heritage of the town. The Streetscape Manual will ensure that the new streets and spaces will be built to a consistently high standard and will fit comfortably into the existing town.”

The manual provides advice, recommendations and requirements for the integrated use of materials, planting, lighting, artwork, signage and street furniture, as well as setting out design standards for the quayside promenades and the introduction of more tree-lined main roads with cycle lanes and five metre wide footways.

The manual is the product of a close collaboration between a number of Council units, the Police link will open in new window and the Council’s Landscape and Architecture Consultants B and B Small Global.

Free leaflets are available at the Civic Centre reception, St John’s House on Serpentine Road , Poole Libraries and Poole Tourism link will open in new window. The manual can be viewed in full at: www.boroughofpoole.com/streetscapes.
