Poole To Go Smoke Free

The Borough of Poole has welcomed a Government announcement which will see the introduction of a smoking ban in enclosed public spaces from 1 July 2007.

The ban will cover virtually all enclosed public places in England, including offices, factories, pubs and bars, but not outdoors or in private homes.

Pubs and restaurants will have to display prominent ‘no smoking’ signs at all entrances of their premises from 1 July.

Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “The announcement sends a clear message to all businesses and organisations that they need to be ready so their premises are smoke free for staff and customers by 1 July. The Council will be working with businesses offering advice and support to comply, as well as working with our partners in the Bournemouth and Poole Primary Care Trust link will open in new window Smoke Stop team to offer stop smoking services.“

Jeff Morley, Team Manager, Environmental & Consumer Protection Services, Borough of Poole, said: ”These requirements will make a real difference to people’s health and working environments. International evidence from countries which have introduced smoke free requirements is that the impact on the hospitality trade is not detrimental. Indeed a survey of pub landlords by The Times link will open in new window in October found nine out of 10 pubs which had already gone smoke-free were selling more food and profits had increased.”
