28 Apr 04Pride of Place and Sustainability Awards 2004
The Borough of Poole are looking for nominations for the best in newly designed buildings, landscaping or scheme of improvements within the borough to be nominated for Poole’s Pride of Place Awards. Once again for 2004 there will be a special award for the best example of sustainable construction. Councillor Ron Parker, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Local Economy, said: "The awards have been a regular event in Poole since 1980 and we become increasingly proud of the heritage that we continue to build upon in the Borough." Last year, two awards were presented. Firstly for the refurbishment of the Lighthouse This year, the judges are not just looking for developments with design quality but also those that have focused on sustainable construction techniques. They are particularly looking for innovative response to the particular qualities of the site, development materials, construction techniques, information technology, community involvement and local sourcing. As part of this the Borough of Poole are encouraging everyone involved in the development process to sign up to ‘Future Foundations’, a sustainable construction charter promoted by Regional Government in the South West. The awarded plaque, which can be displayed on the building, is given to the scheme that makes the greatest contribution to sustainability, quality and appearance either in the form of buildings or landscape. John Biggs, Borough of Poole, said: "There is no restriction on the size or type of the scheme to be considered and anyone can nominate. This is a real opportunity to show off the wonderful work that is going on in Poole." Notes: Entries will be judged by a panel of five including the Mayor, The Chairman of the Planning and Development Sub-Committee, and architect nominated by the Local Chapter of the Royal Institute of British Architects plus two other invited judges, one of whom will be an expert in sustainable development. The closing date for this year’s award entries will be 12.00pm on Tuesday 1 June 2004. Forms can be collected from the Council Officers, any public library in Poole or can be downloaded from www.boroughofpoole.com/planning. Nomination forms should then be returned to Head of Planning, Design and Control Services, Borough of Poole, Civic Centre, Poole, Dorset, BH15 2RU or via email to j.biggs@poole.gov.uk. Details of all the entries submitted will be available for viewing from Monday 7th June on www.boroughofpoole.com/planning If you know any building or improvement or a piece of landscaping that serves nomination,, or a new project that has used sustainable construction techniques, then you can either contact the architect or developer or make your own nomination.
, Poole’s Centre for the Arts, who were awarded the prize for Sustainability with the imaginative rejuvenation of an existing building. The second award was given to the Branksome Chine Café for Conservation for the careful and contemporary alteration to the well-loved 1930’s Bathing Station.
