21 Jul 03Summer Park and Ride Bus Service
Building on the successful Christmas service, Poole Council will be introducing a summer Park & Ride service starting on Saturday 26 July. It will run from Monday to Saturday between Falkland Square in the Town Centre and the purpose-built site in Creekmoor. The service, operated by Wilts & Dorset Bus Company with quality, fully accessible buses, will operate on a similar timetable to the Christmas service.Buses will depart the Park & Ride site at Creekmoor every 10 minutes between 08:20 and 18:00. They will return from the Falkland Square bus stop every 10minutes throughout the day with the last departure at 18:13.
The service will operate, Monday to Saturday, from Saturday 26 July to Wednesday 3 September, including Bank Holiday Monday 25 August (normal timetable). The adult return fare will be £1.50 with up to two accompanied children travelling free of charge. There will be no charge for parking and car-park security will be provided.
Councillor Ron Parker, Portfolio Holder for Local Economy including transportation, said: "By providing a convenient and low-cost Park & Ride service, at peak visitor times when it is most needed, we are supporting the vitality of the Town Centre. Local workers will benefit from the scheme and shoppers and visitors will find the town even more accessible, helping to make Poole their first choice."
He added: "We have inherited the Park & Ride without adequate funding provision and we need to establish the demand and financial consequences before introducing it on a more permanent basis. We want to reassure residents, commuters, shoppers and visitors that we will be seeking to ensure that it is easy to travel around the town even when all the new developments that are planned are fully up and running. Further extending Park & Ride, as and when the time is right, could be an essential part of this."
Andrew Bryce, Wilts & Dorset's Operations Director, said: "We are pleased to be working with the Council to build on the very successful Christmas 2002 Park & Ride shuttle and hope very much that this new summer operation will help establish Park & Ride as a permanent feature in Poole."
