Buying For Baby Then 'Buy Wise Be Safe'

Being a new parent can be a daunting task and because of this Borough of Poole and Poole Hospital link will open in new window are teaming up to offer new parents a free child safety DVD.

The 'Buy Wise Be Safe' DVD provides valuable advice from choosing the right car seat, cot or pushchair to safety tips around the home concerning high chairs, safety gates and smoke alarms.

Borough of Poole's Environmental and Consumer Protection Services will supply  3,500 DVD's to Poole Hospitals Maternity Unit who are distributing the DVD's to all new parents when they first meet a midwife.

The DVD is part of a regional safety drive by Trading Standards link will open in new window Professionals across the South West (SWERCOTS link will open in new window) to give clear advice on child safety delivered through child health professionals.

Cllr Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: "Every year more than 500,000 children under the age of four are taken to hospital as a result of accidents in the home. Most of these accidents are preventable with a little knowledge and awareness. Both the Hospital Trust and the Council hope that this DVD will make a significant improvement to these appalling statistics."

Chris Tickell, Head of Midwifery for Poole Hospital NHS Trust, said: "Many parents might be new to parenthood and we hope this DVD will prove useful to them."
