17 Jan 07Poole Pupils Learn While They Play
Poole schools will soon be receiving FREE educational board games to enhance pupils knowledge of Poole Harbour and sea safety.
The learning tool, which has been designed and produced by Poole Harbour Commissioners
is to be distributed to all first, primary, middle and combined schools in Poole.
Cllr Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Children's Services, said: "The board game is an excellent learning tool to educate young people about the harbour and its importance to the town as well as the message of sea safety, which is key for people living in this part of the country."
The game is being launched at Longfleet Combined School with year six students on 23 January at 10 am and will be issued to all schools at the beginning of the spring term.
The game has been designed so that it covers as many relevant issues relating to the port and harbour. To enhance the educational value of the game, a 'Did you know that…' list of facts and 'The Poole Harbour Race in your Classroom' fact-sheet have been prepared to accompany it.
Sally Porter of Poole Harbour Commissioners said: "We have produced the game to give to the local schools as a tool which they can use in the classroom as part of the national curriculum to allow local children to find out a little bit more about Poole Harbour in a fun way. We have tried to incorporate as many of the different activities and things that go on in the harbour as possible."
It will also be distributed free to sailing clubs, field study and activity centres and other appropriate clubs and organisations in the area. In addition, the game can be downloaded from at www.phc.co.uk
so it can be printed out and played at home.
