The Future of Branksome Park Conservation Area

Local residents are being asked for their views on the future of the Branksome Park Conservation Area.

Branksome Park has experienced on-going pressure for development, which often seeks the demolition and replacement of houses and taking out trees and hedges typical of the area.  The Borough of Poole’s Planning Services has been working on a set of guidelines to help protect the conservation area and ensure that future changes are carried out in a way which preserves the appearance and characteristics of Branksome Park.

The Draft Conservation Area Plan has been prepared as part of the Borough’s on-going work to protect the towns areas of architectural and historic importance.  Branksome Park is the first of the Boroughs 21 conservation areas to be reviewed and updated.

Branksome Park is one of the largest conservation areas in the borough covering some 353 acres.  It is also unique within Poole being occupied by large tracts of woodland with architecture that represents the gradual evolution of the area over more than 100 years, as evidenced by the diverse range of architectural styles.

Peter Watson, Head of Planning, Design and Control Services, Borough of Poole, said: “The unique character of Branksome Park has attracted a lot of developer  interest and we need to ensure that the speed and process of change is managed so that those things that make it special place are not lost.”

Councillor Ron Parker, Portfolio Holder for Local Economy, said: “I am pleased that this consultation is being carried out. The document will be a useful guide for local residents who would like to change their properties, or others looking to carry out development within Branksome Park, so that plans can be designed to fit in with the character of the area.  This is an opportunity for people to influence development in their local area.”

The Draft Conservation Area Plan can be viewed at Planning Reception, 2nd floor of the Civic Centre, on boroughofpoole.com/opinions, at Branksome Library on Ashley Road and Canford Cliffs Library on Pine Cliff Road.

A public meeting will also be held on Tuesday 18th April 2006, at All Saints Church Hall, Western Road, Branksome Park between 7.30-9pm, where residents can discuss the document and the issues facing the area with Officers.
