21 Jun 04Wanted: Aspiring Young Writers for "the engine"
The Borough of Poole is calling all young people with passion and ambition. If you are aged 15 to 25 years and you know that writing for the theatre is a talent that you are bursting to develop, there is a great opportunity for you to join “the engine”, a regular workshop at the Lighthouse
, Poole’s centre for the arts.
Local professional writers and theatre practitioners including Forest Forge and John Foster, the scriptwriting fellow at Bournemouth University, will support the group and work towards rehearsed readings of the work by local actors.
Councillor Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Learning, said: “This is a marvellous and exciting opportunity for young people who are keen to get involved with theatre and the arts. There is a tremendous amount of talent out there among our young people and I’m sure that with the help of professionals the engine will go from strength to strength.”
The writers’ group is being co-ordinated by playwright and novelist Nell Leyshon. Nell is currently under commission by the Hampstead Theatre and her first play The Farm toured the South West and was produced at Southwark Playhouse in London. She writes regularly for Radio 4 and 3, works as literary manager for rural touring theatre company, Forest Forge, and is a part-time tutor on the scriptwriting degree at Bournemouth University. Her first novel, Black Dirt, set on the Somerset levels, has just been published by Picador. Nell was born in Glastonbury and lives in Bournemouth.
