31 Oct 06Message of Vigilance When Buying Fireworks
As Bonfire night approaches the Borough of Poole Environmental & Consumer Protection Services (E&CPS) are warning people to be vigilant when buying fireworks over the next few weeks.
The warning comes following a seize of 80kg of unlicensed fireworks at Magna Road Car Boot Sale at the weekend. The fireworks seized caused Officers particular concern as they were displayed for sale on a tabletop on the floor. The Car Boot Sale was extremely busy and there were a number of people walking around the site smoking. The fireworks are yet to be examined to ascertain whether they are safe.
E&CPS are keen to make the public aware that fireworks sold from unlicensed sellers may not be safe and if they are not stored correctly may pose an immediate hazard.
Retailers selling fireworks are required to obtain a licence from the Local Authority before they can sell them which imposes conditions including storage, it is also an offence to sell fireworks to a person under the age of 18.
Lucy Magill, Regulatory Services Manager said; “Fireworks are intended to be something for the whole family to enjoy, however there is a dangerous element to them if they are not managed in a responsible manner. We want to ensure that people across the Borough enjoy a safe fireworks night. Either attend an organised event or buy your fireworks from a reputable retailer.”
If you see fireworks being sold at car boot sales, markets or on the street you should report this to your local Trading Standards on 08454 04 05 06 or 01202 261700.
