Community Transport for Wheelchair Users

An essential addition to the Poole Community Transport Service is a brand new Citroen Berlingo. The vehicle has been specially converted and has the necessary equipment to carry wheelchair passengers. Voluntary driver, John Wright, was one of the first to use the Berlingo when he transported passengers to a Stroke Club held at Merley Community Centre.

Poole Community Transport Service offers accessible transport to people with specific travel and access needs. The service is operated in partnership by the Borough of Poole and Poole Council for Voluntary Service. It is specifically for residents of the Borough who do not have access to private transport and are unable to use public transport.

Voluntary drivers, using either their own cars or the Berlingo provided by the Borough of Poole, are able to offer a door-to-door service for essential local journeys (fares are charged).

Councillor Ron Parker, Portfolio Holder for Local Economy including Transport, said: “I am delighted that this recent addition to the Poole Community Transport Scheme is helping to improve access to essential services for people in greatest need. The Borough of Poole is committed to supporting the health and well-being of all its residents  and is pleased to be working in partnership with Poole Council for Voluntary Service”.

Chris Beale, Director of Poole Council for Voluntary Service, said: “With our volunteers, we have been working alongside the Borough of Poole for a number of years to provide the very popular Poole Dial-a-Bus scheme. I am sure that the new Berlingo will provide the extra flexibility required to strengthen Poole’s community transport proviision”.
