17 Jan 07Help I've Become A Carer!
A free study day is available for new carers in Poole who are looking after a friend or relative in need of help and support at home.
The study day will take place on Wednesday 28 February between 10.30-3.00pm in central Poole. Carers will be able to find out about available services and support, including local agencies as well as the benefits and funding offered to help with caring. The day will also give people the opportunity to meet others in a similar situation.
This event is a joint project between Borough of Poole Social Services and local charity ‘Help and Care’
.
Val Mitchell, Carers Services Manager, said: ”When people are new to caring it is difficult for them to find out what help is available or who to turn to. Carers do not have to cope alone. Days like this are designed to give information and support in a friendly, informal environment and to introduce carers to professionals in a relaxed way.”
Cllr Elaine Atkinson, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Community Support, said: “More than 14,000 people in Poole care for someone who is ill, elderly, frail or disabled. Many people do not know how to seek the help they are entitled to. In the long term this can lead to a stressful situation for both the carer and the cared for person. Borough of Poole is committed to helping people get the support they need to carry out their roles effectively and contentedly.”
Early booking is advised for this event by contacting Val Mitchell 01202 261174 or Alison Pagram 01202 261113. Low cost help can also be arranged to look after the cared for person while the carer attends the event by contacting Valerie Millin at Help and Care on 0845 4500 418.
