An ambitious library project and learning centre for Rossmore is on track to open in January 2005.
The state-of-the-art facility on the Rossmore Community College campus is aimed at creating a facility that challenges traditional barriers to gaining access to education, learning and resources as experienced by many people.
The facility will provide a comprehensive library, 20 computers offering internet access, 20 lap tops in a new learning room, extended opening hours and a wide range of borrowing facilities.
Councillor Tony Woodcock, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Learning, Borough of Poole, said: "The Rossmore Community Library will be a flagship enterprise, with state of the art facilities providing a much needed boost for the learning community. It is a very exciting project that will benefit both pupils at Rossmore Community College and the wider community."
A number of initial funding difficulties with the project were identified but have since been overcome. The estimated costs have been reduced but the project is still on target to deliver a high quality facility. Among the reductions was the decision not to go ahead with a sophisticated stock management system which would have cost almost £140,000 to set up and a further £22,000 a year in running costs.
John Nash, Policy Director for Education, Borough of Poole, said: "The costs for the project were revised but as most of this saving was behind the scenes on the stock management system the facilities and service received by the public are little affected. In fact what is planned is a tremendous improvement on what is currently in place and a huge asset for the community. Pupils will be able to use the facilities in the morning and other users in the afternoon and early evening."
