New Garden Waste Collection Sites

The Borough of Poole is giving a helping hand to those residents looking to dispose of their garden waste this summer with the Borough's first green waste collection sites.

The collection sites are in addition to the green waste bin scheme which was introduced to an initial 12,000 properties last month. Around 128 tonnes of green waste were recycled by households in the first week of the scheme which will be rolled out across the borough over the next couple of years.

Starting on the 29th July the new collection sites will be at St Barnabas Church, Bearwood and Rossmore Leisure Centre, Alderney every other Saturday, in the morning and afternoon respectively, until September.  The waste collected will then be taken to a composting site in Hurn where it will be recycled. Recycling garden waste means it can be converted into compost  which can then be re-introduced into gardens helping to improve the texture, drainage and aeration of soil.

Councillor Don Collier, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: "Garden waste is no different to any other recyclable rubbish and should not go to landfill.  Our garden waste recycling scheme has been a great success so far and we are planning to roll the scheme out to as many households as possible. In the meantime these collection sites are designed to help those people not included in the pilot dispose of their garden waste correctly and easily."

All garden waste is welcome at the collection sites including grass cuttings, hedge & shrub clippings, plants & weeds, leaves, twigs and bark, cut flowers, pot plant compost. Other household waste should be taken to the Nuffield Household Recycling Centre.

This service is only available to residents of Poole and proof of residency e.g. drivers licence or council tax statement is required to use the facility.
