A 12-session course for carers run by the Borough of Poole Adult Social Services starts on March 8 2006. The course is available to Poole residents if they are looking after a friend of relative who needs help.
Approximately one in eight people care on an unpaid basis for someone who could not manage without assistance due to an illness, disability or aging.
Participants will have the opportunity to meet a range of professionals including benefit advisors, occupational therapists, district nurses and safety and back care advisors. The course is held in a venue close to Constitution Hill, Poole and lunch is provided. Attendance is free to carers who live in Poole or look after someone living in Poole.
Val Mitchell, Carers Development Officer, Adult Social Services, Borough of Poole, said: “People who have attended previous courses have found it very helpful. The training is packed with practical information that can help people who are caring at home. Carers will find that they are better equipped to deal with the everyday difficulties that caring can raise. People will also learn about what services are available and how to get help if they need it. This is a great opportunity to meet other people in a similar situation.”
Sessions on the course include practical care techniques, how to move a patient who needs help with mobility, first aid, carers’ rights, a guide to benefits, stress management and using the internet to help carers find information related to caring.
“The great thing about this course is the diversity of sessions on offer. Participants can attend the whole course or just the sessions that they need,” added Val. “There is a warm and friendly environment; no writing, homework or assessment so it is suitable for people who are new to caring or those who have been caring some time. It may also be possible for us to help arrange someone to look after the cared for person whilst the carer attends.”
Course fill up quickly so those interested in attending should apply as soon as possible. Telephone Val Mitchell 01202 261174 for a course programme and application form.
