Abolition event at Rossmore Library

Multiculturalism, past and present, was one of the main themes of an event held at Rossmore Library on 29th March. The session was organised by DEED, Development Education in Dorset, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade.

Local poet and historian, Louisa Parker introduced the Black History in Dorset Project, a research project to trace the past and present experiences of black and ethnic minority people in Dorset. Filmed interviews with individuals relating their experiences growing up in Dorset were also shown. The research project continues through 2007 and the organisers hope to display their findings in the autumn.
The event also marked the end of a very successful mass reading project to encourage people to read Andrea Levy’s Small Island which deals with the theme of immigration into Britain after the war. At the end of the session, those attending made black and red hand prints on fabric to commemorate the events of 200 years ago.
