8 Feb 07Poole's Declaration To Keeping Green
Borough of Poole has underlined its commitment to improving the environment by signing an important declaration to address the impact of climate change.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Brian Leverett and John McBride, Chief Executive of Borough of Poole, have signed the Nottingham Declaration
– a voluntary code of practice inviting councils across the UK to take steps to cut carbon emissions and improve overall environmental performance.
By signing the Declaration, Borough of Poole has committed to develop plans with partners and the local community within two years to address the causes and impact of climate change.
It means the Council has the opportunity to lead Poole’s response to climate change, by encouraging residents, businesses and other organisations to reduce their energy costs and improve the local environment.
Borough of Poole has already introduced a number of innovative measures aimed at cutting its impact on the environment. These include:
· an Home Energy Conservation Strategy which has delivered domestic energy savings of 35%over a nine year period;
· introduction of two environmentally-friendly refuse and recycling vehicles fuelled by vegetable oil.
The Council is committed to introducing further measures across its services aimed at cutting carbon emissions and creating financial efficiencies.
Cllr Don Collier, Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: "The Nottingham Declaration is an important step for Borough of Poole and shows how serious we are about making a difference in our own community. We will work with residents in Poole and other local authorities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, which will have a cost saving implication for councils all over the country.”
More than 160 local authorities have now signed the Nottingham Declaration, which is administered by the Energy Saving Trust
.
Last month, 60 senior managers from Borough of Poole attended a special seminar to discuss the potential effects of climate change on Poole with experts from the Energy Saving Trust, Carbon Trust
and RegenSW
.
A second seminar, for Councillors, school governors, headteachers and other key Council partners, will be held on February 20.
Amanda Pearson, Project Director for the Energy Saving Trust, said: “By signing the Nottingham Declaration, Borough of Poole has committed to adopt a more sustainable approach to energy use, which is key in the fight against climate change. Local authorities are in a unique position in their communities to influence both housing and transport, setting an example with their own buildings and fleets, and encouraging their community to reduce their own energy use at home and on the road.”
