Cycling on the prom

As part of Poole's commitment to making its beaches fun, relaxing and safe places to be - the  Borough's Beach Rangers will be carrying out surveys in relation to cycling along the prom.

Over the next 6 weeks, beach users will be asked their views and a separate survey will also gather information from cyclists about why they use the promenade, how often, whether for work or leisure etc.

Matti Raudsepp, Open Spaces Manager, Borough of Poole, said: "With Poole being such a major tourist destination, our beaches get packed through the summer months and it is important that we do everything we can to ensure the safety of the public.  These surveys will help us better identify the different needs of people using the beaches and the promenades - by doing this we will have more flexibility when considering cycling restrictions."

Current restrictions in Poole state that no cycling is allowed along the promenade, from Shore Road to the Borough boundary, between 10am and 7pm from mid-June to mid-September.

Cllr Don Collier, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: "Safety on Poole's beaches is a top priority and we must ensure that all users are considered.  Our aim is to restrict cycling when the beach is at its busiest in an attempt to avoid conflict between cyclists and pedestrians, particularly young children or the elderly who may be unaware of cyclists approaching.  Our rangers do a great job managing the beaches, especially in the summer months when they deal with thousands of people!"

"Sadly some cyclists disregard the many signs along the prom advising of the restrictions and this year in particular staff have had difficulty enforcing the rule.  The restrictions are there to protect the safety and enjoyment of all and it is important that we make this message clear."

Some confusion for cyclists may occur when they cross the boundary between Poole and Bournemouth, where restrictions are between 10am and 6pm through July and August only. Visitors to beaches in Poole and Bournemouth will be asked for their views this summer and it is hoped that feedback will result in a common policy towards cycling next year.
