16 Sep 04Poole's CCTV Cameras are Extended
Further crime busting Closed Circuit Television Cameras have been added to the Borough of Poole’s existing camera network.
Two of the four additional cameras are located along Ashley Road, a third is on the Redlands roundabout and a fourth on Poole Road opposite the Sewards Franchise and the Woodman public house. The cameras have been funded from the Council’s Capital Programme and the Crime and Disorder Partnership.
The cameras relay images to Poole’s CCTV Control Room at the Civic Centre by using Super High Frequency microwave links, which are sub-networked via the Wessex Water Tower and another site at the Branksome Railway Hotel.
Graham Chaplin, Project Manager for the scheme, Borough of Poole: “The technology used to support these cameras has allowed us to increase security measures in particular locations, which have been identified as ‘hot spot areas’ for crime and anti-social behaviour.”
Councillor Chris Bulteel, Chairman of Poole’s Crime and Disorder Partnership, said: ”CCTV is one of many crime prevention measures that can be used to prevent and detect crime or incidents of anti-social behaviour. The mere presence of CCTV cameras alone can make people feel safer and increase levels of public reassurance. Incidents recorded on the cameras can also be used to aid the detection of crime and identify the perpetrator, often leading to arrests and convictions. The fact that there are steps that can be taken following an incident to assist the Police during their investigation can also increase the public’s perception of feeling safe in the community.”
Councillor Bill Wretham, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Housing, Borough of Poole, said: “ The addition of these four new CCTV cameras is a wonderful step towards increasing public safety. We hope that, along with existing security measures, the cameras will reduce anti-social behaviour in local ‘hot-spot’ areas.”
